30 years and a real loss...the first famous person I recall actually dying...
Hard to believe but it has been 40 years since the leader of "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Harts Club Band" was killed by some nut while he was walking home with his wife. Link to remastered video.

When people bring this up, I am always perplexed as to why I should care.
It's just another violent death, of which the world has no end, and frankly, I never saw anything special about John Lennon.
It doesn't help that I never cared for The Beatles, and felt that their music was just pre-destined for elevators everywhere. It's shallow bubblegum, that set back rock and roll for a couple decades.
Or that Lennon's post-Beatle music was antithetical to my core beliefs, and, well... just really crappy, and reflective of pseudo-intellectuallism, political naivete and obviously the result of limited talent combined with lots of drugs.
Personally, I know better people whose death I will mourn.
How about Jim Morrison? Link to article where the Governor of Florida issued a pardon concerning Morrison during a Rock Concert in Miami forty years ago.
