He was a major at the time of Ia Drang's LZ X-Ray. Ancient Serpent 6, it has been a long time coming. Out.
He was a soldier once.....and young.
LTC Bruce Crandall was originally awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions at LZ X-Ray in 1965. That was later upgraded to the Distinguished Service Cross. President Bush hung the Medal of Honor around his neck on February 26, 2007. LTC Crandall wore his blues and Cav Stetson for the ceremony.

I got an e-mail from Joe Galloway on Tuesday saying that he was in Washington getting ready for the ceremony. From everything I've seen, LTC Crandall was beeming like a schoolkid. Congratulations to him and everything he accomplished.
He didn't have gunners for his aircraft. That's why he flew unarmed helicopters into the battlefield. He didn't have night vision equipment and other later technology that lessens the danger of flying.
Congrats LTC Crandall !
