Moderator's Note: Title changed on 1st July 2011 from 'Five more dead Americans' to 'US Deaths in Iraq 2011', which seems more suitable as tally of the losses.

BAGHDAD – Five American soldiers were killed in an attack in central Iraq on Monday, marking one of the deadliest days for the American military since the combat mission ended nine months ago.
United States officials provided no additional details on the attacks, but an Iraqi security official said the soldiers were killed after multiple rockets struck an American base in southeast Baghdad. American military officials would not confirm those events.

I don't normally post on this forum but I saw this on the b.b.c website- as soon as I read about "powerful rockets" with special fuses I immediately thought of the indirect fire attack to which you refer. It stinks of Iranian Revolutionary Gaurd involvement. We'll have to wait and see...

I'm guessing it was at VBC.
What a pathetic article. Barely mentions the deaths and then goes on about paying locals to pick up trash.
http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/meast/...raq.us.troops/In a statement posted on one of its websites, Kataib Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack at Camp Loyalty, on the outskirts of Baghdad that killed five soldiers and wounded at least five others.

Two more dead GIs, a footnote at the bottom of an article...
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories...ws_generic.htmTwo U.S. soldiers were killed Monday during operations in southern Iraq, U.S. military officials said. The new deaths bring to 4,462 the number of American service members who have died in Iraq since the war began in 2003, according to an Associated Press count. Eight American soldiers have been killed so far this month.

Fifteen U.S. troops have died this month in Iraq. It's the highest number of military deaths in the country since June 2009, and all but one were killed in combat.

Adam:
Thanks for keeping the running tally/observance.
Although not newsworthy to many, it is of great significance to some.
I remember, through various leaves from Iraq, how, in 2007 through mid 2008, people back home were on the edge of their chair wanting to know "how is it going?"
By the end of 2008, the US public was out of that war, and had been overshadowed by domestic events.
I suspect the same will be increasingly true of Afghanistan. Departure has already been announced. "Are we still there?" "Why is this still significant?"
Several wise owls have argued, for example, that our military departure from Iraq underscores the need for a civilian follow-up. That argument, however, is not surviving on the Congressional floor.
Thanks for honoring those soldiers who did what was asked of them.
