    Russia's Propaganda War Will Backfire
By Mark Lawrence SchradMay. 28 2014
This "backfire effect" does not bode well for a quick resolution to the instability in Donetsk.
Of course, even if the Ukrainian situation stabilizes after the election, recent events will lead to many long-term political ramifications. Yet the Kremlin's instrumental use of state-run media to whip-up a militant furor for its own ends — both at home and in Ukraine — may be one of the longest-lasting implications precisely because it has cut the deepest.

Even though the labels of "Nazis," "fascists" and "Banderites" may gradually be replaced by more traditional homages to the eternal kinship of Russians and Ukrainians, the memory of this Russian vitriol will endure, especially when Ukrainians can easily revisit these narratives, enshrined in the eternal media archive that is the internet.

Future historians may one day write about how in 2014 Russia gained Crimea but lost Ukraine. The Kremlin's media war will play a large part in that story.

Default Secret medals for a very public operation

President Putin recently rewarded some 300 journalists for their 'objective coverage' of the annexation of Crimea. The ceremony was held in secret and very little information is available. Why should this be?

I have a vague recollection that this may have been mentioned before.

Judge for yourself whether the author is correct.

kaur posted this link and one should really look intently at the video for a number of reasons---the most important one is the use of the word "fascist" notice the old man telling a "Chechen" fighter to "kill all the fascists" take no one alive.

    https://news.vice.com/video/bullets-...te-dispatch-42

Now go back and refer to virtually all press releases out of Russian news agencies ie TASS, Interfax and RAI and then Russian tv/radio and then internationally RT and Raptly (for video footage) and count the use of the single word or groups of words using the term "fascist".

One would have a count that goes into literally thousands of times and that is actually significant in the world of propaganda. There is an old language learning rule---repeat the word seven times and it will stick in your head---the same goes for propaganda.

The ethnic Russian/Russian speaking population of the east/south Ukraine has been so "radicalized" via the words "fascists, Nazi's, radical nationalists, junta, coup" etc. that there is currently no way the Kiev government can get into a meaningful dialogue as demanded by Russia with the two areas.

If one had the link that I posted on the Ukraine discussion which was removed by SWJ one would have seen a number of cell photos on his cell taken by a dead "Chechen" fighter which clearly identified him as a member of a known fanatical Putin supporting Chechen "nationalist" grouping that has been brutal in Chechnya and in Western terms would in fact be defined as "fascist" and actually if one Wikipedias' the term "Russian fascism" the group would even be defined under Russian terms as "fascist".

What was striking in the photos was the use of the unit's Chechen logo and the Russian 4X4s in the parking garage carrying Russian plates and their carrying of the AK105 only issued to Russian GRU/SF types.

When one discusses information warfare then refer to the eight phases of the new Russian UW strategy call new generation warfare and see exactly what emphasis they place on it.

When one now sees how this "Chechen" group has formally taken over control on the ground now in the Donetsk one might in fact state the east has been lost as it is now Putin's favored "nationalist" group in full control in the Donbas---the criminals and locals have been pushed to the side and the Chechens are in full control---ie the Crimea all over it just took more time and yet the Ukraine thread does not see that shift as mirhond the FSB commenter has kept the responses going in an interesting direction and totally away from that shift by his comments which are interesting to watch.

There was a recent statement by a Russian media type who stated we "won the military war in Georgia but lost the "information war"---this time we are "winning handedly" and the West has truly lost.

    This statement says it all.

Then on the SWJ Ukraine thread we get a taste of the information warfare and for some reason we commenters seem to turn a blind eye-interesting is it not that when we use the term "fascist" we in the West define and react differently to it and run from it instead of "fully understanding just how it is used"?

Instead we should be debating and commenting on how exactly this word "fascist" has become the central messaging of the Russian information war under their new UW strategy and it has been working brilliantly based on Western actions or rather inactions.

Here is the referenced cell phone photos found on a dead Chechen fighter involved in the airport fighting.

    http://obozrevatel.com/crime/58036-c...to-i-video.htm

Does it "appear" that he is not just a "war tourist" but actually potentially a member of a paramilitary organization that evidently is "allowed" to exist in Russia ie Chechnya.

If there is any doubt as to where Russia stands in the eastern/southern Ukraine--this article should suffice to confirm Russian actual involvement on the ground there. THEN understand the relationship to the cell photos and the article below-significant.

Since some on the various SWJ threads take offense at the term "fascism" or "fascist" especially those say in Russia---here is an interesting article from 2010 by the Moscow Times a relatively middle of the road media website.

If one then looks at how Russia uses the term "fascist" against the Ukraine--we inherently truly need to understand how it both "exists" and is "used" by Putin, the FSB and the GRU in furthering their new UW strategy especially how it is applied to the Ukraine and potentially the Baltics and Poland.

In it's use in propaganda it is a strong "radicalizer". In it's use on the ground it is a potent irregular military force to be reckoned with.

    http://www.themoscowtimes.com/opinio...te/427504.html

This article from 2012 makes several interesting comments by a Russia is in fact either close too and or already in a "fascism state of being".

So just how does Russia level the charge of fascism against the Ukraine propaganda wise but ignores itself and has no fear that the same propaganda will not be leveled against them at some point---is worth a doctoral thesis in political science.

Alexander Dugin has been more popular talking head during Putin's last term. In Ukraine theater he is also involved. So called "Donetsk republic" embassy was located in his youth movement office in Moscow. His team started cooperation with Donetsk republik cadre some good time ago. SBU intercepted his call to Republics activist's, who was under arrest, wife. I don't count all the TV shows where Dugin was present.

In 1991-1992, Dugin wrote his programmatic article “The Great War of the Continents,” in which he claimed that the representatives of this order could be found in the Abwehr, the Third Reich's counter-intelligence service, and especially in the Sicherheitsdienst, the security service of the SS. Dugin called its chief Reinhard Heydrich (1904-1942, an organizer of the Holocaust) a “convinced Eurasianist,” who, allegedly, fell victim to an intrigue by the “Atlanticists.”
Recently, Dugin has adapted his own rhetoric to mainstream Russian discourse and now often presents himself as a “radical centrist” or even ardent “anti-fascist.” One might add though that, as late as 2006, he praised in public the German ultra-nationalist brothers Otto and Gregor Strasser who had helped Hitler build up the NSDAP in the 1920s (before they left the Nazi party because of a personal conflict with the Führer, in the early 1930s). In March 2008, Dugin's website Evrazia.org confirmed “Dugin's sympathies for the Strasser [brothers].”

Statement from TASS today concerning there are no Chechen divisions in eastern Ukraine.

    http://en.itar-tass.com/russia/734162

What is interesting is that of the 34 dead Russians that were sent back to Russia 18 were identified as Chechen from their IDs and photos on cell phones.

There are evidently another 32 Russian bodies still unrecovered near the airport.

But the Chechen irregular leader is arguing only "14" were known to have gone--BUT it was "on their own as they were not told to go"---although one of those killed in a video interview just prior to his death "claimed" he had been called and asked to go and he went.

Seems that someone's math/explanations do not add up.

Russian news agencies TASS and Interfax have repeatedly stated during the last week that Russian border guards are not "looking the other way" and allowing weapons and munitions to be smuggled into eastern Ukraine.

But then this video comes in from the Ukrainian border security service 27 May.

    http://www.rferl.org/media/video/ukr.../25401273.html

And then link from BBC indicating a separatist controlled border town being a central hub for crossing irregular fighters and helicoptered in weapons.

An enlightening article on the use of a single "individual" in multiple different TV interviews by a Russian TV Station.

According to the same leak, that talks about trolling, FSB and Russian presidential administration have been coordinating information flow in Russian central mass media organisations since beginning of December 2013. This leak is talks about newspaper "Moskovski komsomolets".

Wise words indeed. I hope she and almost all the others stay safe, which is sadly not sure as payed thugs have attacked, kinapped and even tortured and murdered those which speak out against Putin's madness. Perhaps the greatest tragedy that some of the seperatists, brainwashed by Russian propaganda, are indeed fighting for the 'good' cause.
