MOSCOW – Russia said Monday its navy is holding drills off the coast of Crimea to practice thwarting an attack on the Black Sea peninsula it annexed from Ukraine last year.

    *

The drill will include the navy’s guided missile hovercraft Samum and several smaller ships, as well as Su-24 bombers, he said, and will finish by launching a cruise missile strike.

The Russian Navy plans to create special military units that would play the role of potential enemy forces during naval exercises, Russian Navy Rear Admiral Viktor Kochemazov said, according to TV Channel Zvezda.

Moscow's military force in Syria has grown to about 4,000 personnel, but this and more than a month of Russian air strikes have not led to pro-government forces making significant territorial gains, U.S. security officials and independent experts said.

Moscow, which has maintained a military presence in Syria for decades as an ally of the ruling Assad family, had an estimated 2,000 personnel in the country when it began air strikes on Sept. 30. The Russian force has since roughly doubled and the number of bases it is using has grown, U.S. security officials said.

The Russians have suffered combat casualties, including deaths, said three U.S. security officials familiar with U.S. intelligence reporting, adding that they did not know the exact numbers.

Is Russia working on a massive dirty bomb?

On November 10, 2015 President Putin held a regular meeting with his generals in Sochi to discuss development of the Russian strategic forces. The president used the occasion to complain again about U.S. missile defense plans and to warn that Russia will do whatever it takes to preserve the strategic balance.
    Details follow

UPDATE 11/12/15: The story generated quite a buzz, which is probably what the authors of this whole thing counted on. The consensus that is emerging from a number of discussions is that the "leak" was intentional. Moreover, a colleague who follow these things quite closely made a strong case that the "drone" on the slide is probably just an enlarged (and modified) image of a "regular" torpedo (such as UGST). This would explain the unusually large "combat module" and a number of other inconsistencies. However, the rest of the slide seems real - the submarines, the Zvezdochka ship, etc. Indeed, it is quite possible that the project is real as well - the Soviet Union did work on an underwater vehicle like this in the 1980s (here is an interesting story, although I would take it with a pinch of salt). Specifically, some work has been done on the vehicle's nuclear reactor. The project was abandoned, of course, but these things rarely die. In fact, NITI in Sosnovy Bor is building a new facility to test liquid metal-cooled naval reactors. It is probably not related to this drone, but who knows.

Still, the whole thing strikes me as crazy regardless of whether the project is real or not. If it is real, I find it quite appalling that the ideas of this kind ever reach the level of a discussion with the president. If it is an attempt of high-level trolling, it's even worse - if people in the Kremlin believe it was a clever way of sending some kind of a signal, they probably lost all their marbles.

The Russian Armed Forces could soon receive the first preproduction prototypes of the next-generation S-500 air defense system, defense expert Igor Korotchenko asserted. Russia is paying particular attention to developing aerospace defense systems, he noted. “We heard figures indicating that the Russian Aerospace Forces will soon receive more S-400 systems. The S-500 will soon finish state tests and enter service,” Korotchenko said following the board meeting of the Russian Defense Ministry on Friday.

The Russian Navy has operated more and further afield in the last year than it has in decades, but the current high operational tempo maybe difficult for the Russian’s to sustain over the long term.

According to a report from the TASS wire service, there are about 70 Russian ships operating around the world, quoting Russian Rear Adm. Viktor Kochemazov – the head of the navy’s training warfare said this week.

The Russian Navy is “now present almost everywhere,” he said.

“Some 70 warships of the Russian Navy are practically constantly present in the world ocean to designate and fulfill the tasks set by the command.”

A Russian destroyer has fired warning shots at a Turkish vessel in the latest clash between the two countries in the Aegean Sea, officials have said.

The Russian Defence Ministry told reporters it had summoned the Turkish military attache over the incident, which according to Russian media reports involved a Turkish fishing vessel.

According to the Interfax news agency, the destroyer Smetlivy fired shots after the Turkish vessel ignored repeated warnings it was on a collision course for the warship. It said the boat sharply changed its course after shots were fired, at its closest passing within 540m of the Russian ship.

These flights are a regular event, they have never publicly entered actual UK air space (which is 12 miles from the land). They do enter the UK Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ), which extends much further than actual UK air space and officialdom states an intercept is needed to ensure the safety of other aircraft - Russian planes do not fly with a transponder turned on.

Not that UK / US / NATO aircraft ever fly on similar missions towards Russia.

What is interesting is again they flew with transponders off and the UK was pre-warned by NATO Baltic Air Defense units...UK did not notice it on their own until shortly prior to entering UK ADIZ as the UK scramble made it after they had crossed into the ADIZ not prior to it.

Actually social media picked up on their air traffic even before the NATO Baltic Air patrols announced it.

Russian corvettes equipped with Kalibr cruise missile capable of penetrating complex air defenses and hitting targets at a supersonic speed at a distance of some 2,000km will be permanently deployed in the Mediterranean, a Russian Navy admiral said.

One year old alibi - have a flashback to the 1980s.

Russia has deployed a fleet of spy trawlers off the British coast to intercept military communications, one of Britain’s most senior retired commanders said yesterday.

Lord West of Spithead said Russian espionage had soared to a ‘worrying’ level as president Vladimir Putin ordered more acts of ‘provocation’.

Equipped with hi-tech surveillance, the converted fishing boats have been seen in the international waters of the North Sea by Nato aircraft.

Lord West, a former First Sea Lord, said the Cold War tactic was designed to gain intelligence on Britain’s nuclear missiles and warships.

He said: ‘It was quite a tense business during the Cold War and now it is winding up again and it is very worrying. They seem to have... increased espionage, which raises tension.’

    AdamG,

Not that the West, via NATO, conduct such eavesdropping missions off Russian territory. It is rare to see any reporting on that. I can recall a USAF RC-135 Rivet (ELINT) plane being "chased" into Swedish airspace in 2015 IIRC and the Norwegians have a vessel full-time deployed in the Barents Sea (there are posts on both on the Forum).
