The Russian defense industry has constructed six Varshavyanka diesel-electric submarines from the 636.3 project for the Black Sea Fleet. These submarines are equipped with the new winged Caliber-PL missiles, which can strike targets up to 1,500 miles away.
*
According to Kasatonov, defense industry enterprises will build six equivalent submarines for the Pacific Ocean Fleet. "The industry is also building a series of strategic missile submarine cruisers from the 955 Borei project," he said. The navy has received three of these submarines and will obtain another five by 2020..The Russian Defense Ministry's main resources are now being invested in the modernization of submarine bases in the Far East, in the city of Vilyuchinsk in the Kamchatka Region (4,150 miles east of Moscow) and in Novorossiysk on the Black Sea coast (940 miles south of Moscow). Four subs from the 995 Borei project are destined for the Kamchatka base and four will be sent to the North Fleet docks.
Three Varshavyanka 636.6 diesel subs with the Caliber winged missiles are on alert in Novorossiysk and within three years, after the construction of all the navy infrastructure is complete, the base will receive the other three subs from the series.
Russian experts say that the new program has taken into account the mistakes that the USSR made in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when large Krechet aircraft carriers from the 1143 project were introduced to the navy. The fleet received the vessels but there was no infrastructure to service them and they were forced to remain in the docks on a permanent basis, producing electricity with their diesel engines and burning up their resources, something that resulted in them being written off prematurely. Now an entire series of coastal infrastructure is being created for each ship and submarine

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-37303247The Pentagon says a Russian fighter plane flew within about 10ft (3m) of one of its reconnaissance aircraft operating over the Black Sea.
US officials described the intercept by the SU-27 jet on Wednesday as "dangerous and unprofessional".
Russia's defence ministry said the US plane had been approaching Russian territory and the SU-27 pilots had adhered to international rules.

http://thediplomat.com/2016/08/russi...uth-china-sea/This week, Russia’s Pacific Fleet will dispatch a number of surface warships to the South China Sea to participate in the annual Sino-Russian naval exercise, dubbed Joint Sea 2016, held from September 11 to 19, TASS news agency reports.
“At the beginning of September, a detachment consisting of the big anti-submarine ships Admiral Tributs and Admiral Vinogradov, the big amphibious ship Peresvet, the sea towboat Alatau, and the tanker Pechenga will head for Zhanjiang in China,” the chief press officer of the Eastern Military District for the Pacific Fleet, Captain Second Rank Vladimir Matveyev said.
The Admiral Tributs and Admiral Vinogradov are both 6,930-ton Project 1155 Udaloy I-class anti-submarine warfare destroyers originally built for the Soviet Navy. The destroyers also have anti-ship capabilities and carry the P-270 Moskit supersonic ramjet powered anti-ship missile (NATO reporting name: SS-N-22 Sunburn).

https://www.rt.com/news/361699-syria...navy-missiles/The two guided missile fast attack craft left from the port of Sevastopol on October 4 and are currently sailing through the Black Sea in order to join up with the Russian fleet.
The Serpukhov and the Zeleny Dol already participated in Russia’s Syria operation in the Mediterranean in the middle of August, when they fired three Kalibr cruise missiles at Al-Nusra Front terrorists before returning to Crimea in September.
The US Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) is wary of the Kalibr missile, which “is profoundly changing its ability to deter, threaten or destroy adversary targets,” the report published in December said.
Tangential plot twist.
http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/syr...-syria-n658741WASHINGTON — In a sharp deterioration of relations, the U.S. on Monday suspended diplomatic contacts with Russia over Syria, while Moscow halted cooperation on a joint program for disposal of weapons-grade plutonium.
The U.S. move followed a threat last week from Secretary of State John Kerry after new Russian and Syrian attacks on the city of Aleppo. The State Department said Russia had not lived up to the terms of an agreement last month to restore the cease-fire and ensure sustained deliveries of humanitarian aid to besieged cities.
"This is not a decision that was taken lightly," State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement. "Unfortunately, Russia failed to live up to its own commitments ... and was also either unwilling or unable to ensure Syrian regime adherence to the arrangements to which Moscow agreed."

Someone's a tad tardy.
http://www.janes.com/article/64643/r...ria-deploymentRussia's only aircraft carrier, Admiral Kuznetsov , is nearing the end of a work-up period outside the port of Murmansk before heading for the eastern Mediterranean, reportedly to begin air operations against targets in Syria.
The first combat deployment of Kuznetsov was announced by Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu on 21 September, when he said the 55,000-ton carrier would be escorted by six warships and three or four support vessels.
UK naval sources say they expect Kuznetsov's departure to be "imminent".
"We and our NATO allies have been watching her work-up closely and we think they have got her pilots qualified and safe to fly off the ship," a senior naval officer told IHS Jane's on 13 October, adding, "She has been going in and out of port over the past week or so to get everyone spun up. That seems to be done now."
http://www.cnn.com/2016/10/10/middle...-tartus-syria/Russia plans to expand its supply base in the Syrian port city of Tartus into a permanent naval base, Deputy Defence Minister Nikolai Pankov said on Monday, according to state news agency TASS.
"In Syria, we will have a permanent naval base in Tartus. The corresponding documents have been drafted. Currently they are in the process of inter-departmental coordination," said Pankov, during a meeting of Russia's Federation Council's international affairs committee.

Story Soviets Carrier Admiral Gorshkov-Vikramaditya
From Journal of the Australian Naval Institute No150
Perhaps more significantly, when
the Russians sold her, the carrier had
no usable powerplant, due to a fire
in her boilers. Replacing or repairing
the boilers was a major job, given the
amount of ship structure between
them and the flight deck. When
Vikramaditya ran her first sea trials
last year, when she was to have been
delivered, her engines suddenly cut
out when she reached 30 knots. It
turned out that seven of her eight
boilers had failed because the fire
(insulating) bricks in them had melted
http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/...cid=spartandhpBRUSSELS — Russia canceled a request to refuel a flotilla of its Syria-bound warships at a Spanish port Wednesday, according to Russian state-run media and other news reports. The move came#among mounting criticism leveled at Madrid from NATO’s secretary general and Britain’s defense minister.
The Russian battle group, containing cruisers, submarine hunting warships and Russia’s lone aircraft carrier — the Admiral#Kuznetsov — were set to refuel in#Ceuta, a port situated in north Africa near the Strait of Gibraltar, before heading to the Mediterranean Sea. While Spain has allowed Russian ships to use its refueling facilities in the past, the small armada’s likely mission — bolstering Russia’s strikes in Syria — has drawn widespread condemnation, forcing Spain into an uncomfortable position with its allies.

Russia's only aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, has set sail for Syria. The vessel is leaving a long and unhealthy trail of smoke in its wake.
Moscow's symbol of power projection is old and in danger of breaking down as it make its way from the North Sea to the Mediterranean. The Russians have also discovered that this smoldering boat and her naval task force are unwelcome, as port after port along its route refuses entry now that human rights organizations and governments worldwide have accused the Russian government of war crimes.http://www.popularmechanics.com/mili...-smoky-voyage/Kuztnetsov is a notoriously unreliable ship. She was built by the Soviet Union in the late 1980s and languished in Russian service after the Cold War. In 2009, a problem with the electrical system led to a fire that killed a crewman. The ship's propulsion system has never worked properly and breaks down so frequently that it, like many other large Russian Navy ships, always travels with an oceangoing tug. The ship broke down in early 2012 off the coast of Spain.

The Royal Navy and Nato have been tracking the two Akula-class submarines and a diesel-powered Kilo-class sub as they travelled to join the fleet of Russian ships headed by the Soviet-era aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov.
“The Russians now have submarines in the Med,” a senior naval source told#The Sunday Times.
It is feared the submarines may be armed with Kalibr cruise missiles and could be used to support the final assault on the besieged city of Aleppo.#
