Spotted by another friend a news story picked up by a mobile phone website: http://web.orange.co.uk/article/news..._tactic_review
There is a short video clip by Sky News and the story opens with:I do recall twenty five years ago the death toll for US LE was cited on a Rochester PD duty parade as several a week, occasionally one a day.A series of shootings has left 15 officers dead in January alone - with 11 killed in one 24-hour period alone.
Is this a media furore or does it reflect concerns on the ground and further up the command / political chain?

Crazy media. You can look up every officer here www.odmp.org and find that 160 died last year. It varies year to year but is about that many.
Personal note. I've personally known three officers shot in the line of duty in the last six months.

VAN NUYS (CBS/AP) — A man shot and damaged a Los Angeles police helicopter Sunday and forced it to make an emergency landing at a Van Nuys airport before he was subdued by family members and arrested, authorities said.
The man was firing shots at random with a rifle early in the morning, then turned his fire toward the responding police helicopter and hit the fuel tank, Assistant Chief Earl Paysinger said. The helicopter landed safely at Van Nuys Airport, and no officers were hurt.

A report on 'Think Progress' via Twitter and sub-titled:Several graphics and a map that shows Florida is a "hot spot".Data shows dozens of officers have been murdered by the far-right over the last decade. But no one seems to be talking about it.

I would be very careful about using any reporting from the Southern Poverty Law Center, which has not been fit for purpose for some years now. In addition, you will often find circular confirmation where a Progressive publication cites the same data using different intermediary sources.
The problem with Progressive definitions of "far-right terrorism" is that they are a catch-all for criminal and political violence carried out by non-Hispanic white Americans; if need be, Hispanics are included, such as was the case with George Zimmerman, who killed Trayvon Martin in 2012 (also in Florida). We find that Christian anti-abortion activists are lumped together with pagan white supremacists, neo-Fascists, neo-National Socialists, and radical Libertarians.
In the case of TP/SPLC/ADL, the objective is to inflate the number of law enforcement fatalities. To this end, corrections officers are included, as well as officers murdered at traffic stops and serving warrants. With regard to methodology, if a white supremacist who is also a drug dealer responds violently to a warrant being served, is this an act of "far-right terrorism"? In that case, is every black American who kills a law enforcement officer for whatever reason and under whatever circumstances a black supremacist terrorist if they have any materials on the Nation of Islam or the Black Panther Party?
When we look at data from the FBI's Law Enforcement Officer Killed and Assaulted Program (LEOKA) the following stands out:
- Black Americans comprised a mean average of more than 39% of assailants of murdered law enforcement officers from 1996 to 2016
- During this period, black Americans comprised more than 12% and less than 13% of the U.S. population
When we look at data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics' Arrest-Related Deaths Program (ARD) the following stands out:
- Black American deaths comprised a mean average of 35% of law enforcement homicides for the years 2003-2009, and 2011
- For comparable LEOKA data, black Americans comprised a mean average of 44% of assailants of murdered law enforcement officers for the same period
- The ARD data includes both justified and unjustified law enforcement homicides
With regard to terrorism in the United States:
- Some 229 people have been murdered in the US in terrorist acts after September 11, 2001 to present
- 127 of these have been murdered during Islamist terrorism (55.46%)
- 74 of these have been murdered during far-right terrorism (32.31%)
- 28 of these have been murdered during non-far-right terrorism (12.23%)
Compare these terrorism fatalities to these demographics:
- 1% of the U.S. population is Muslim
- 61% of the U.S. population is non-Hispanic white
Thoughts?
Thanks Azor for this post. I am aware that SPLC has critics and engages in some strange actions.

Not a problem. I am a quantitative fellow by nature because I find that qualitative evidence is rather anecdotal and skews the perception of what should be objective facts.
For instance, as an outsider stealing a glance into the circus tent that is America, you might ask why there is such inaction on firearms control given the massacres and high firearm death rates. This is why:
- Gun control advocates combine firearm deaths for both homicides and suicides, and the latter do not convince advocates for the Second Amendment
- White Americans, including Hispanics, comprise 72% of the U.S. population
- The intentional homicide rate among white Americans is 1.90 per 100,000, despite being 4.90 for Americans overall (per UNDOC)
- Although 1.90 is slightly higher than many other Western countries, albeit slightly lower than Belgium, it is not stark enough for enough white Americans to want more gun control on the whole
- For black Americans on the whole, the intentional homicide rate is worse than that of Northern Ireland during the Troubles, and even Malaya during the Emergency
- Basically, most white Americans live in a security environment comparable with their Western peers; most black Americans live in a security environment that is equivalent to a low-level warzone
- For those that believe racism is non-existent in America, one only has to compare the media coverage of school massacres in predominately white areas with less security than 'inner city' schools, with the coverage of homicides in Chicago
Of course, given Britain's rate of 0.90 and the fact that knives are simply less effective than guns, you might think that Americans are envious of the British. Some are, particularly the East Coast urban Democrats who gush over British and Commonwealth accents (Morgan, Noah, Oliver, Jeffries, etc). Yet enough white Americans believe that an unfettered Second Amendment protects them from tyrannical governance, despite the 'King of War' and casualties - artillery - being conspicuously absent from the list of permissible weapons. Enough also believe that it keeps them safe from violent criminals. Basically, it is no different than the illusion of control whereby people prefer to drive rather than fly, or people refusing to use seat-belts or airbags because sometimes these safety features cause death and injury.
As for law enforcement officers in the US being more disposed to using deadly force? Well, at any time they can be dealing with an armed and intoxicated suspect; at any time, they can cross from Provence into Helmand.
Rant over.

Probably suitable for a multiplicity of threads -
https://www.yahoo.com/news/fbi-arres...061700569.htmlCustom, extra-secure BlackBerry phones remain a staple of the criminal underworld, and a recent bust just illustrated this point. Motherboard has learned that the FBI arrested Vincent Ramos, the founder of the well-established phone mod seller Phantom Secure, for allegedly aiding criminal organizations that include the Sinaloa drug cartel. The company altered BlackBerry and Android devices to disable common features (including the camera and web browsing) while adding Pretty Good Privacy for encrypted conversations. And it wasn't just turning a blind eye to the shady backgrounds of its customers, according to investigators -- it was fully aware of who was involved.

Police are hunting for the suspect, a tall, light-skinned Hispanic man with a thin build and a tattoo of three dots next to his eye.

The title is from the Gilchrist County Sheriff's comments:Two sheriff's deputies in Florida have been killed after a gunman shot them through the window of a restaurant where they were eating, police say.Link:http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-43840907I don't have answers to why this happened....What do you expect happens when you demonise law enforcement to the extent it's been demonised? Every type of hate, every type of put-down you can think of...The only thing these men were guilty of is wanting to protect you and me. They just wanted to get something to eat, and they just wanted to do their job.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/04/25...y-in-2018.htmlSince the start of 2018, at least 33 law enforcement officers across the U.S. have died while on duty -- with 21 of the deaths caused by gunfire.
Roughly 135 cops died in 2016, making it the deadliest year for police officers in at least five years, Fox News has determined. While there were fewer deaths in 2017, the numbers weren’t much better: A total of 129 officers died last year. And 46 of those deaths were caused by gunfire.

A data breach at a federally funded active shooter training center has exposed the personal data of thousands of US law enforcement officials, ZDNet has learned.
The cache of data contained identifiable information on local and state police officers, and federal agents, who sought out or underwent active shooter response training in the past few years. The backend database powers the website of Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training -- known as ALERRT -- at Texas State University.
The database dates back to April 2017 and was uploaded a year later to a web server, believed to be owned by the organization, with no password protection.
https://www.zdnet.com/article/a-mass...ta-has-leaked/"This intelligence could be easily exploited by domestic terrorists or 'lone wolfs' to exploit the weaknesses discussed in this correspondence," he said. "For instance, an individual who wanted to push a particular state or local agency and the community it supports into a crisis need only look for an agency or community in this data that has expressed concern for their ability to respond to a active shooter."
The database has since been removed, but it's not known who else accessed it or what damage may have already been done.
