    Default Tatarstan (catch all)

    Moderator Adds

AdamG is now an avid watcher of matters Tatar / Tatarstan, but other posts existed and have now been merged here. Post No.1 was copied from another thread. Thread re-named (ends).

With the North Caucasus already a bastion of Islamist insurgency, Tatarstan is a place to watch. There is the potential of an Islamic flavored nationalism or even Islamism to develop. There are two million Tatars most of whom are Sunni Muslims; and as a Turkic people could follow the increasing ranks of Turks / Turkic people becoming Jihadi’s.

Default Mujahideen of the Emirate of Bulgaristan [Tatarstan]

Get your bags of popcorn ready, today's Derka-Derka moment brought to you by those wild and crazy guys over at the Mujahideen of the Emirate of Bulgaristan [Tatarstan].

    From MEMRI

The mujahideen of Tatarstan (Bulgaria-Russia) region have warned of "some surprises" during the 2014 European tour of British singer-songwriter Elton John, according to a jihadi forum.

The Pakistan-based Jhuf.net republished a letter from Abu Umar, who is described as the representative of the "Mujahideen of the Emirate of Bulgaristan [Tatarstan]", warning against Elton John's visit to Kazan.

According to the letter, imams of local mosques are already warning their audiences about the visit, accusing Elton John of promoting sodomy. Elton John and Paul McCartney are likely to kick off their 2014 tour at Lokomotiv Stadium in Sofia, Bulgaria on May 17, 2014.

Anyone familiar with the Muj habit of Man Love Thursdays should find their beef* sort of contradictory. Guess it isn't the right flavor of sodomy.

    * Pork would probably be a more fitting verb, but ... you know.. swine and all that.

    Default Meanwhile, in Tatarstan

Refinery fires happen all the time in winter. Probably nothing...

“Neftekamskneftehim” is the largest oil refinery in Europe. It is located in Tatarstan, Russia and today, at 7.00pm Moscow Time, dozens of firemen were urgently summoned as the oil giant started burning.

    Hey, that's interesting...
More army movements have been spotted, this time in Tatarstan, Russia. This video was shot on 03-03-2014, on a road in Tatarstan. Also, in response to this posted video another poster (commenter) added: “And just fifteen minutes ago, there was a train full of tanks headed to Moscow”.

Didn't I read something about these guys last week?

KAZAN, February 28. /ITAR-TASS/. Chairman of the Islamic Religious Department in Russia’s constituent republic of Tatarstan, Kamil Samigullin, has issued an appeal to fellow-Muslims in Ukraine to stay away from fanning of civil war in that country.

“A threat of civil war and endless bloodshed is looming over the people of Ukraine and a scenario of this kind should not be admitted under any circumstances,” the mufti’s appeal said. “Whatever the political discords that might be tearing society apart, all of us should always remember the borderline, which we must never overstep.”

    Uh huh.
SIMFEROPOL, March 03. /ITAR-TASS/. Rustam Minnikhanov, the president of Tatarstan, has said he could act as an intermediary at negotiations between the Crimean authorities and the Mejilis of the Crimean Tatar People, Crimea’s First Vice-Premier Rustam Temirgaliyev told journalists on Monday after talks with the Tatar community leaders.

“We are discussing whether Rustam Minnikhanov, the president of Tatarstan, can act as a guarantor of agreements between the Crimean government and the Mejilis of the Crimean Tatar People. We are in the process of discussion and we hope to reach some kind of agreement in two or three days. We will have no grounds for threatening inter-ethnic peace and accord in the autonomy,” the first vice-premier went on to say.

Also, kind of ironic that the Crimea and Tatarstan are mentioned in the same breath in Preventive Negotiation: Avoiding Conflict Escalation.

MOSCOW, March 5 (RIA Novosti) – The president of the Russian republic of Tatarstan traveled Wednesday to Crimea in southern Ukraine to meet with representatives of the Tatar community, which make up more than one-tenth of the peninsula’s population.

The Crimean parliament said in a statement that Rustam Minnikhanov was met in the administrative capital, Simferopol, by top local officials and the Russian consul.

Minnikhanov is due to hold talks with leaders of the local Tatar community, which has come out in support of the newly installed government in the national capital, Kiev.

An agreement on cooperation between the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Tatarstan was signed in Simferopol on Wednesday, an Interfax correspondent has reported.

The agreement was signed by Crimean Prime Minister Sergei Aksionov and Rustam Minnikhanov, the head of Tatarstan.

After the document was signed in the Crimean Council of Ministers, Aksionov thanked members of Tatarstan's delegation for taking the time to come to Crimea "at this difficult time and plan steps for further cooperation."

Who Will Protect the Crimean Tatars?

I happened to be at ATR when Aminov arrived. His laughter echoed through the newsroom as he walked around, praising the station’s modern equipment and avoiding any discussion of the news. When I asked Aminov about the reason for his visit, he said, simply, “I am here to support my brothers in a time of trouble.” Linur Yunusov, a senior journalist at ATR, told me that while no Russian official had ever bothered to visit Crimean Tatars before, Moscow was now sending one delegation after another. “This sudden brotherly love is overwhelming,” he joked.

At one point, a journalist inside the newsroom called Aminov’s attention to a television screen, which showed masked Russian soldiers blocking the entrance to a military base outside Simferopol. “This is our live position,” the journalist said, provocatively. “A perfect view of the Russian occupation.” Aminov didn’t take the bait. “Which editing software do you use?” he replied.

Russia risks a repeat of its bloody entanglements in Chechnya if it annexes Crimea, a senior Crimean Tatar leader has warned, with extremist elements in the community threatening jihadi-style violence against Russian troops occupying the peninsula.

Mustafa Jemilev, a member of the Ukrainian parliament, said a number of militant Tatars had approached him to say they would fight the Russians.

    @AdamG

Volga Tatars and Crimean Tatars are differend kinds of the Tatars. Both are susceptible to islamism, though.

ps. Tatarstan, along with Dagestan and Chechnya are situated in Europe, how they ended up in "Central Asia " thread is a mistery to me.
