    Punishment:
    After jail and fines.
1-write a letter of apology to any living relative of all the names on the wall.
2-Repaint or clean or repair every grave maker at Arlington cemetery.

    Default Defacing the monument

Does anyone have a link to a news story on this, or has the media not covered it?

    You forgot #3.

Clean every public restroom in the greater DC area with a tootbrush. Also, no gloves.

If perps are identified, simply publish their names and addresses. Pour encourager les autres.

From professionalsoldier<dot>com. I'm not sure who this was sent to.

Subject: RE: Correction on Vietnam Wall Defacement
    Date: Tue, 11 Sep 2007 10:23:21 -0500

Received this morning. Take care and God bless.

    Correction on Vietnam Wall Defacement

    Patriots and Comrades All:

After several attempts, I was able to contact SGT xxxxxxxx
of the National Park Service (NPS), to check on the facts
about the defacement of the Vietnam Wall last weekend. He
explained it was a cleaning accident by a Park Ranger and
NOT a defacement as was originally reported by the Vietnam
Veterans of American (VVA). The NPS is regarding this as
an accident instead of an act of vandalism or terrorism.

Our National Commander Pat xxxxxxxx has the
direct phone numbers for SGT xxxxxx of the NPS, and can
verify these facts with him directly. A copy of this
correction is also being sent the VVA for their follow up
and verification. My apology for the error, as sometimes
it is not always possible to reach the NPS immediately.

Any future report of attempted or actual vandalism will
be verified with the NPS in advance, even if that means a
significant delay in reporting the incident.

    Yours in Patriotism,

    Steve C
    Commander
    Region I, MOPH
    NE/Mid-Atlantic USA
Military Order of the Purple Heart
    Example is better than precept.

Here's the video made of damage to the wall. Also, the FReeper said that there are multiple deep, long, vertical scratches/gougesEast Wall Panel 15E and that the Nurses Statue and Brothers statue has been defaced or vandalized also. He will post another video soon.

That same individual has allegedly denied having sent this e-mail, and there appears to be no NPS employee by the original name referenced.

The damage is most probably NOT a maintenance error. Unless they are also doing maintenance by scraping with a screwdriver and knife to deface names on the wall, also. Reported the at the same time the oily substance was discovered along the length of several panels of the wall.

    From The Wall's information page.

WHAT KIND OF STONE IS THIS?
It is black granite from Bangalore, India, one of only three places in the world (the other countries are Sweden and South Africa) that you could get this amount of black granite in large sizes. Rogan Granite Industries was responsible for obtaining the stone. It is used for the walls, safety curbs and walkways. The lettering is light gray in color, the natural color of the abraded stone, which contrasts sharply with the polished black surface, making it extremely legible.

    WHERE WAS THE STONE CUT?

All cutting and fabrication were done in Barre, Vermont. The variations in color and texture between the panels and the curbs and walkways are a result of different finishing techniques, i.e. polishing, honing and flame treating.

    HOW WERE THE NAMES CARVED?

The names were NOT carved by hand, but by a computerized typesetting process (by Datalantic, Incorporated, Atlanta, Georgia) called photo stencil gritblasting, developed by Larry Century, specifically for the Memorial, in Memphis, Tennessee.

    HOW WAS THE PROCESS DONE?

The process is of a digitized typeface called Optima. It involves a film negative at one-third in size from which an enlargement is made, a film positive (a stencil) at full size. The next step is coating the granite, which has been polished, with a photo sensitive emulsion, and the image is then transferred from the enlargement to the stone in a process very similar to silkscreening. When this step has been completed, the stone within the area of the letters is exposed and the remaining surface is protected by the emulsion. The size of the letters is .53 inches, and they are approximately .015 inches in depth. Inscribing of the names was done by Binswanger Glasscraft Products. The inscribing of the additional names (April and May 1986) was done by Great Panes Glasswork, Incorporated (based in Denver, Colorado) with a coordinated effort by Cooper-Lecky Architects.
    Example is better than precept.
