Default Strategic Studies Institute Seeks Visiting Professors

The U.S. Army War College Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) seeks a resident visiting research professor for the 2011-2012 academic year with a possibility of renewal. This is a research position with no teaching and limited administrative duties. The successful candidate will advance their own research while simultaneously producing SSI studies on national security policy and military strategy.

SSI serves as a bridge between the U.S. Army and the strategic, policy, and scholarly communities. SSI has a strong interest in global and regional security. SSI faculty influence national strategy through rigorous, policy-focused research, publication, and presentation of findings to government officials, academics, and members of the news media.

In addition to the excellent Army War College library, archives of the nearby Military History Institute, and the assets of nearby Washington D.C., SSI faculty draw on the expertise of colleagues who are active and retired military officers, members of the Foreign Service, representatives from the Intelligence Community, and civilian scholars. SSIís contacts in the defense policy community provide visiting professors an opportunity to observe the national security policy process from within as well as the chance to influence it. For more on SSI, see http://www.strategicstudiesinstitute.army.mil/

The U.S. Army War College is located in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, a small, historic town 20 miles west of Harrisburg, the state capital. It is within an easy drive of many recreational, artistic, and shopping opportunities including Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Hershey, and the Amish country. Local public schools are considered very good.

The successful candidate for this position must have a strong record of research and publication, understanding of U.S. national security policy and strategy, and the ability to draw policy and strategy implications from their work. Primary criteria for selection include the likelihood of producing studies relevant to SSI's core audience, a research focus that fills a gap in SSI's staff expertise, and the ability to bring diverse perspectives to SSI. All speciali-zations will be considered but SSI has particular needs in the security of South and Southeast Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa.

This position is authorized under the Intergovernmental Personnel Act and is contingent on funding. The visitor must be a full-time employee of an educational or research organization eligible to return following their appointment at SSI. Students, employees of the Federal government, and employees of for-profit organizations are not eligible. The visitor will remain an employee of his or her current institution. The Army War College will reimburse the employing institution rather than paying the visitor directly. The Strategic Studies Institute provides generous travel and research support, and may provide assistance with relocation or living expenses.

To apply, mail, fax or email a c.v. or resume, one sample publication, a summary proposed research agenda, and a one paragraph proposal for an SSI study to:
