Default Tips & Tricks -- Small Wars Council

Just realized a couple of long-time members had no idea there was a search function on the board. It works pretty well.

You can find it here:
1) in the "nav button bar" - that blue menu bar across the top of the page.
2) in the Search This Thread or Search This Forum similar menu bars at the top of the forum/thread displays when you have a forum or thread open
3) in the Forum Jump pop-up box at the lower right of most pages, toward the top of the menu that expands when you click on the box

Note if you are not logged in you'll have to verify an image to search. If you are logged in, you don't get slowed down by that.

There are also two handy canned searches:
-- New Posts, in middle of blue nav bar
-- Recent Posts, in top right corner up in the banner

Also note that there's a section in the FAQs that has the stock tips from vBulletin on how to use this forum software. If you choose to wade through any of that, FYI:
- we have enabled global e-mail and private messaging
- we have enabled avatars and custom avatars
- HTML is disabled for security, but you can use BBcode to sex up your posts.

The User CP, another option in that top menu bar (visible only when you're logged in), lets you control your account settings.

Default Privacy and Messaging in SWC

The e-mail address that you provided when you registered allows you to subscribe to threads and notifications that you control, if and when you value them. But the reason we require it is to help us combat spam and frivolous posts. It allows us to require up front verfication of your account, eliminating most bots and some troublemakers from registering and posting. It also allows us to contact you (which we almost never do) should there be problems with your registration or activities.

YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IS NEVER DISPLAYED IN OR AVAILABLE TO USERS IN THIS FORUM.

YOU CAN PRIVATE MESSAGE WITH IMPUNITY WITH NO RISK OF DISCLOSING YOUR ADDRESS

The "Private Message" feature of the forum is enabled. It is anonymous on both ends -- the forum software controls both ends of the transaction and you share only your screen names with each other. No e-mails addresses are disclosed at any time.

THE "E-MAIL TO MEMBER" FEATURE EXPOSES SENDER'S ADDRESS via the e-mail client's settings.

The "e-mail to member" feature of the forums is enabled. If a member uses that feature to e-mail another member, the message flows through e-mail clients rather than through the forum's PM system. The initial RECIPIENT's e-mail is kept anonymous by the system, so you will never expose your address by enabling the setting and receiving e-mail via the system. However, by using e-mail instead of PM to send that message, the recipient will see the SENDER's e-mail in the from/reply to/etc. blocks via the e-mail client (e.g. Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.). And if the recipient chooses to reply via e-mail, then that probably discloses the e-mail address via the mail client, though not via the forum directly.

YOUR OPTIONS

You can enable or disable e-mail and private message options for your account, or update your e-mail address, via the User Control Panel (log in, select UserCP in menu bar). We encourage you to leave them on. After all, the point of this is a community.

Note that there is a setting in the UserCP related to Private Messages, that conrols whether the system notifies you by e-mail when you receive a PM. Alternatively, you just have to wait until you log in and find it. This is a system noticiation, NOT an e-mail from a member, so your e-mail is not disclosed by that notification.

Default Question - subscribing?

I see there is a subscription function. But when I tried it by putting names of folders cut and pasted in there it didn't work. Is there a way to make this work? And would it be possible to have a check box at the bottom of a thread's screen to turn on to subscribe?

I have used several systems (Caucus is one) that allow one to automatically step through all new posts in all conferences with the ability to use a check box to forget things. That works rather well.

Default Ways to home in on content, other than just clicking around...

There are several tools, none of which do exactly what I think Brian Hanley is asking, but all have some utility.
  • New Posts - top blue bar menu, in the middle (when signed in). Lists posts that you have not read (and are less than 10 days old). Across all forums that you have privileges to see. This sounds closest to what I think you are asking. We just enhanced this feature a few days ago, so it now provides better tracking of what you have read (post-based, not session-based).
  • Recent Posts - top left, under the donkey. Lists posts within the last 24 hours.
  • Subscribe to a forum or thread. Select drop down menu Forum Tools or Thread Tools, towards the right side of the blue bar at the top of the forum or thread display. In conjunction with some settings there and your UserCP, this provides for e-mail notifiation when there are posts in your subscribed forums. You can view and manage subscriptions from your UserCP.
  • External feed to a feed reader. See this thread. Options to sort and view are based on your feed reader. Note that this method only provides feeds for those forums that our unregistered members can see, so nothing in the Members Only area goes out. Provides the last 15 posts to your feed reader.
Keep an eye out for the icons on the left of most forum display pages. There's a legend at bottom. They show where the new posts and unread threads are.

I need to make the RSS, Atom etc. links visible and available. There's a little bit of info on the rest in the FAQs.
