At the beginning of the Crimea event and then eastern Ukraine I often stated here that the sanctions should have gone straight to sectorial levels and then straight at Putin--but some SWJ commenters felt differently. Sanctions should have as well focused on the Russian population as well in order to give them a "wake up" call on what is ongoing inside the Ukraine

They put emphasis on "negotiations" instead of confrontation---and now with the Russian peacekeeping army safely inside the eastern Ukraine.

Had the Russian economy crashed several months ago Putin would not be making the military moves he is today making.

Which way was the correct one?
