I was impressed with the post by LTC Malevich on the "Dilbertizing" of COIN. However, I think it is actually not Dilbert, but his pointy-haired boss that is the guy behind that graphic. And while LTC Malevich did a nice job pointing out the issues, I think he will have the same impact as Dilbert has in the following cartoon, for very similar reasons.

The greatest educational dogma is also its greatest fallacy: the belief that what must be learned can necessarily be taught. — Sydney J. Harris

I'm reminded of a conversation that I had with our BN Civil Affairs guy in April 2003, in Baghdad...
Him: Don't worry. Brigade's CA plan is nested in Division's.
Me: What's Division's plan?
Him: They're waiting for Brigade to think of something.
Me: So is our plan nested in Brigade's?
Him: Kind of. They're waiting for the battalions to think of something, but I can't really do much when our AOR boundaries change twice a day.
Me: Well, at least everyone is on the same sheet of music.
Him: Yeah, they're all making fart noises with their armpits in perfect unison.
Me: I guess we're not redeploying before the fourth of July, huh?
Him: [Laughs water through nose]
"The status quo is not sustainable. All of DoD needs to be placed in a large bag and thoroughly shaken. Bureaucracy and micromanagement kill."

"With a plan this complex, nothing can go wrong." -- Schmedlap
"We are unlikely to usefully replicate the insights those unencumbered by a military staff college education might actually have." -- William F. Owen
When I used to hitch a ride down to Baghdad once a month, also in '03, to try and have some face time with someone about the whole situation outside of our Division's AO I was always just kinda stunned and amazed...
I liked Ken's response to you the other day; I paraphrase...'sometimes I think they just need to put all of DOD into a bag and just shake it vigorously'. Sometimes I think we need to add more to the bag than just DOD.
Anyway, Merry Christmas Schmedlap, perhaps Santa will be delivering that CA volunteer paperwork I asked him to give ya
